Sorry, we’re not authentic or unique

Why we don’t promise authentic experiences in Sri Lanka

“Authentic”
“Unique”

They’re probably the two most overused words in travel.

Browse any travel website and you’ll find authentic homestays, authentic food, authentic villages, unique experiences and hidden gems. Apparently, everything is authentic and unique.

Which raises a simple question. Who decides what is authentic?

Is there a certification body somewhere handing out authenticity badges? We’ve certainly never come across one. And that is exactly why we don’t promise authentic or unique experiences at The Curious Experience. Not because we don’t value authenticity. But because we don’t believe it’s something a travel company gets to decide. We think that’s something only you can decide.

A couple of weeks ago, I was driving to a meditation retreat and decided to stop at an old temple famous for its intricate wood carvings dating back to the 14th and 15th centuries. I asked an uncle (in Sri Lanka, every elder is an uncle or auntie to us) sitting nearby whether there were any wood artisans in the area who still practiced the craft. “there are many”, he said, pointing me towards a few workshops before adding “I don’t carve wood…but I know the history of every pillar in this temple”.

Some of the pillars I photographed

He then invited us to sit under the shade and spent the next twenty minutes sharing stories about the temple’s history, occasionally breaking into song. He must have been in his eighties. His Sinhala was difficult to follow. Even my friend struggled to understand everything he was saying.

But somehow, none of that mattered.

The uncle who sang for us…

I left smiling.
Now tell me…

Was that an authentic experience?

Last year, we worked with a young couple from Canada who explored Sri Lanka with us. It was a last-minute request, and if I had to sum up the kind of travellers they were: they wanted something new, and to learn about Sri Lanka through conversations with the people who live there, with a lot of flexibility built in. Requests like that are music to our ears.

Like every traveller who journeys with us, they began by completing our questionnaire. We spent time understanding what genuinely interested them before curating a journey around their travel style, interests and expectations.

This is a screenshot from their response to our questionnaire.

One of the experiences we built into their trip was an afternoon with one of our trusted artisan partners in southern Sri Lanka, weaving and making their own cane hats.

Our curious travellers exploring Sri Lanka

It wasn’t added to feel “authentic”. It was simply two curious travellers spending an afternoon with someone who genuinely loves his craft and shares it with fellow travellers who come his way. A pre-organised activity, yes – but one they genuinely loved.

As usual, I checked in with our local buddy (guide) on how it went. He confirmed they’d both really enjoyed it, and shared a photo they’d taken of him with the hats they just made – that put a big smile on my face.

So let me ask you the question again.

Was that an authentic experience?

Here’s the thing – one traveller may find authenticity in a luxury tea bungalow overlooking misty hills. Another may find it eating rice and curry from a tiny roadside kade (shop). Someone else may spend hours exploring ancient monasteries, while another feels most connected chatting to fishermen at sunrise.

None of them are wrong. Because people travel differently, and that’s exactly how we believe travel should be designed.

At The Curious Experience, we don’t start with destinations. We start with you. Your interests. Your curiosity. Your pace. Your expectations.

Then we build your journey around that. Sometimes that journey includes luxury stays. Sometimes it includes muddy boots, village kitchens or conversations that were never planned.

Most of the time, it includes a little bit of everything.

Here’s the Google review the couple left us

For us, the best moments in Sri Lanka are rarely the ones that can be booked months in advance. They’re the unexpected conversations. The invitations for tea. The recommendations from someone you met an hour ago. The detour that wasn’t on Google Maps. Those are the moments people remember. Not because they were advertised as authentic. But because they simply happened.

That’s why we don’t spend much time trying to sell “authentic” or “unique” experiences. Instead, we focus on understanding how you like to travel. We curate your journey around your interests, introduce you to people and places we genuinely believe you’ll enjoy, and leave enough room for Sri Lanka to surprise you.

Whether your trip feels authentic, unique or something else entirely….We’ll leave that for you to decide.

Planning a personalised trip to Sri Lanka?

If you’re looking for a journey built around your interests rather than a standard itinerary, we’d love to chat. Tell us what you’re curious about, and we’ll help you discover a side of Sri Lanka that feels right for you.

Because the most memorable journeys rarely begin with a package. They begin with curiosity.

This is the kind of travel we believe in!

If it resonates with you, we’ll shape your own everyday Sri Lanka experience.
